Just Where Will David Beckham's Soccer Team Call Home In Miami

05/22/2019

The journey to bring major league soccer to Miami took another turn this week. The Florida Supreme Court recently decided not to weigh in on a legal fight over land for David Beckham’s soccer stadium in the Overtown area of Miami. As a result, Beckham’s group now has the option to buy the property.

Douglas Hanks covers the issue for the Miami Herald. He says if the Melreese location is not successful, the Overtown property is now a back up plan. “A stadium site that David Beckham and partners had abandoned a year ago in favor of a much larger piece of property at the Melreese golf course owned by the city of Miami,” said Hanks.

Beckham had previously announced plans for the stadium at the Melreese Golf Course property near the Miami International Airport because this property is much larger than Overtown. The Melreese site would see construction of not only the soccer stadium, but a mall, hotel and office space. The entire project for the Melreese location is named Miami Freedom Park and would give the average soccer fan a lifetime experience in Miami.

Even though Beckham’s group is awaiting City commissioners permission for the property on Melreese golf course they have already asked the city for the permits to build the stadium in the Overtown area. Once given the permits, they have to construct a stadium on the property. “So now it's a bit of a mystery of what the plans is. They are going to be paying 9 million for this property and the orignal deal with the county requires them to build a stadium there,” said Hanks.

Beckham’s major league soccer team is named Inter Miami CF and is expected to start it’s first season in 2020. The Miami stadium will not be completed in time, so the Beckham group is expected to play at their training facility.

The practice site will be located in Fort Lauderda

Jereem Richards Opens Up 2019 Season with Blistering 400m

2017 world champion medalist, Jereem Richards opened up his 2019 season with a 46.33 showing in the 400 meters, this past Friday at Florida relays in Gainesville. “I wanted to focus a bit more on the 400 meters as this will help me build my strength for the 200 meters which is my preferred and main event,” said Richards.

His time was good enough to earn him a third-place finish behind Anthony Zambrano of Columbia, who crossed the line in 45.52 seconds and Alonzo Russell of Bahamas 45.53 who finished second. Richards believes his training is coming along favorably, as he is preparing for the 2019 World championship in Doha, Qatar. “Practice has been good, since it’s a long season with World championships being in October, my training has been more challenging, including longer runs and more load work, but it will pay off in the end.”

Being a medalist at the 2017 championships pushes Richards to stay focus and remain humble. Richards won a bronze medal in the 200 meters clocking 20.11 seconds. He was also part of the gold medal winning 4x400 meters team consisting of Machel Cedenio, Lalonde Gordon and Jarrin Solomon. Both medals serve as decorations in Richards bedroom as a daily reminder of what he has accomplished and as a driving force.” I know that I achieved two medals at the world championships and every day I wake up and look at them, it tells me I have the ability to excel again at the world stage, and to be humble and keep working hard.”

Richards believes mental preparation for upcoming meets is very important. “I pray to God to continue to give me the health and strength.”Heading back into practice this week, Richards plan to work on minor issues to sharpen up for competition. “I’m going to work on my race plan as having got my first race in, I know what to do different.” Richards will be competing this weekend at Louisiana State University (LSU). He’s entered into the 400 meters once again and will run the 4x400 meters relay with other professional Adidas athletes. “I’m trying to get a good workout from the track meet.”

Simona Halep Pushed to the max To Defeat lucky loser Oceane Dodin At Maimi Open

Oceane Dodin didn’t let the numbers affect her as she walked out to the tennis court ranked No.98 and was about to face off against No.1 ranked in the world, Simona Halep. Even though Dodin has no Grand slam titles under her belt, she gave a solid fight from beginning to end. It just wasn’t enough as she was playing Halep, who is a three-time Grand slam finalist having reached her third final this season at the Australian Open.

Thursday, in Key Biscayne with the palm trees dancing in the wind, planes flying overhead and the sun shining down on the tennis court. Fans trickled in to their seats to view the match between Romanian Halep and French Dodin, mainly to see the number one player in the world. She didn’t disappoint showing why she is ranked at the top. Despite what looked like it would be the greatest upset of the Miami open as Halep was down 4-2 in the third set, the world No. 1 prevailed, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. Dodin, won the first set and signaled to the crowd with her hands to make some noise as she believed she was about to show that you can never underestimate a lucky loser. “She played well,” Halep said. “She was hitting the ball very strong, and at one

point I didn't know where the ball was coming from.” Halep was right, not only was Dodin hitting the ball strong but fast. Dodin was unleashing 114-mph serves in

Halep’s direction.

After two sets, the match was tied, and a grueling battle started in the third set. Dodin was bashing the ball into the corners with incredible power and technique. Halep answered with her speed and great shots. She dug deep inside and relied on her mental and physical strength and prevailed the winner.” I just had to stay focus all

the way to the end, I won the match and that’s the important factor.”

This was the first time Halep and Dodin played each other and to the fans they were glad to be part of history. Glad to know that Dodin didn’t surrender to a player five years older than her but aroused to the occasion, to show that she came to play exceedingly well in one of the best tennis tournaments in the world. Dodin showed her emotions to the crowd. Halep got her winning point and Dodin shock her head. Within seconds her tennis bag was on her shoulder and she was leaving the tennis court, swiftly with her head down. Her anger and disappointed showed as the commentator urged fans to recognize her, but she kept walking. No wave or reorganization was given to the crowd that cheered her on to beat the NO. 1 player in the world.

Of course, there was a completely different mood on the other side. As Halep got the winning point, she raised her hands to the heaven and let out a sigh of relief. She knew how disastrous it would be for fans back in Romania to digest that she lost to someone ranked at NO. 98. “It was a crazy match, sometimes I didn’t know where to go, or decide where to hit the ball, but I had to stay focus.” Halep career prize earnings is $22,913,208 while Dodin’s is $913,910. Halep plays Irina Begu tomorrow. “I plan to keep pushing her back and try opening the court,” said Halep. This will be a double match up of Romanian tennis players.
